Destination Coordinates:
40.958,-80.104
Destination Location:
Take the Interstate 79 to Portersville exit. Follow the signs to the North Shore of the Moraine State Park for W, SW and southernly winds or to the South Shore during N, NW winds. One of the good ways to take is to turn left off teh exit and over the interstate and via the Portersville settlement. Once there take Rte 19 north and look for the sign for the Moraine State Park. It will be a "y-fork", not really an intersection maybe a mile up after joining Rte 19 north. Then few miles up you will be able to take a turn for the South Shore or continue straight for the North one.
Site Access:
North Shore: There is a sign to the Barber Point with enough room for your car and even your guests. Pleny of grass to rig just a few yards from the sandy launching beach. Porta-John and changing stalls and water fountain on site. Windsock, or whatever there is left off it.
Site Orientation: SSE.
Winds: S, SW, W, NW, N (for N or NW winds the other side of the lake is more convenient)
Lodging:
This is home for our PAW riders but this info may be helpful to our visitors and guests. This park area is "day use only" but plenty of b&b and restaurants in the Portersville area, just outside of the park.
General Notes:
This is a favorite location in the Pittsburgh area.
Sailing Area Advisory:
During NW, N winds you are better off using the South Shore launching area. The SE facing beech gets shielded from those winds and it takes some effort to get out and in during then swirly conditions. Most often used sail - biggest you have in your quiverbag, sorry!
